Cargo Hold Coatings Exposed

What goes wrong. Why it happens. What 25+ years of investigations reveal.

Session 1
26 August 2026 | 10:00 am (UK time)

Session 2
27 August 2026 | 4:00 pm (UK time)

Abstract

Cargo hold coatings are essential for protecting bulk carriers but operate in some of the harshest marine environments, facing abrasion, impact, moisture, chemical exposure, seawater ingress, and physically aggressive cargoes.

Drawing on over 25+ years of coating failure investigation experience, this webinar examines the most common cargo hold coating failures and the technical and operational factors behind them.

Attendees will explore key failure mechanisms, including mechanical damage, blistering, cracking, delamination, and adhesion loss – supported by real-world case studies.

The session provides practical insights into coating selection, application, maintenance, and operational practices that can improve coating performance, reduce costs, and extend asset life.

  • Why cargo hold coatings fail: lessons from 25+ years of failure data
  • The harsh exposure environment inside bulk carrier cargo holds
  • Common coating failure modes and their root causes
  • The impact of cargo type, loading practices, and operational conditions
  • Real-world examples from coating failure investigations
  • Practical strategies to improve coating performance and longevity
  • Understanding the realistic expectations and limitations of cargo hold coatings

This webinar is open for everyone and particularly ideal for

  • Ship Owners and Operators
  • Technical and Fleet Managers
  • Superintendents and Dry Dock Managers
  • Cargo Claims and Insurance Professionals
  • Coating Manufacturers and Technical Service Teams
  • Shipyards and Coating Application Contractors
