FPSO & FSO

Maximise uptime. Minimise risk.

Your FPSO and FSO coating-related problems cost you more than you think.

At Safinah, we understand the complexity, challenges and scale of FPSO and FSO operations. These floating assets, often positioned in remote offshore locations, operate under some of the harshest conditions in the planet. Ensuring their long-term operational performance and integrity requires deep technical knowledge, robust planning, and a proactive approach to risk management – this is where we come in.

Our coating expertise ensures FPSO and FSO assets long-term performance, and structural integrity.

Maximising Asset Integrity: The strategic value of independent expert coating consultants and technical services

Safinah plays a critical role in protecting high-value Floating Production and Storage Offloading (FPSO) and Floating Storage Offloading (FSO) units by offering objective expertise, quality assurance, and risk-based strategies. From design through to operation, our involvement ensures coating systems are fit for purpose, inspection regimes are applicable and effective, and maintenance planning is proactive, resulting in extended asset life, improved safety, and reduced total cost of ownership.

Understanding our client’s corrosion protection philosophy and operational challenges

Every engagement begins with a detailed consultation to understand our client’s specific FPSO and FSO asset condition, its lifecycle stage (new build, conversion, or in-service), and the unique environmental and operational demands it faces. This includes assessing previous coating histories, environmental exposures, operational conditions for tanks and topsides, inspection regimes, and operational goals such as life extension or decommissioning readiness.

Our team brings cross-disciplinary expertise – spanning coating and sealant systems, insulation, cathodic protection, passive fire protection, corrosion management, and asset integrity – to ensure all perspectives are considered.

Tailored technical strategy

Once we understand the asset’s needs, we develop a bespoke strategy that aligns with project timelines, regulatory standards (like NORSOK, ISO, NACE or client-specific specs), and budgetary constraints.

This could include:

  • Coating condition surveys for the whole vessel
  • Functional coating specification for all vessel areas
  • Specific coating selection for topsides, hulls, tanks, or turret systems
  • Evaluation of coating makers tender offering
  • Surface preparation standards and application techniques
  • Development of detailed coating workbooks for the yard
  • Coating application management acting as owner representative during the project
  • Life extension or refurbishment planning
  • Coating performance assessments and failure analysis

We offer independent and impartial advice, not tied to any product or manufacturer, ensuring the most appropriate technical solutions.

Specification development and review

Safinah often supports FPSO and FSO clients by creating or reviewing coatings specifications. Our experts ensure that specifications are functional, technically robust, realistic to implement, and aligned with global best practices. We also advise on updates for project-specific considerations, like regional regulations/legislation, design changes or new technology adoption.

Vendor and contractor engagement

We frequently assist clients in evaluating coating vendors and application contractors. Our role includes pre-qualification, technical reviews, and tender support. By acting as a neutral third party, we help clients navigate competing claims and make confident, well-informed decisions.

In-field support and inspection oversight

For both dry-dock and offshore fabric maintenance (FM)campaigns, Safinah provides on-site technical support. This might include third-party coating condition inspection services, in-yard or offshore coating application management, troubleshooting of in-progress applications or FM project lead. We act as the client’s eyes and ears, ensuring specifications are met and that long-term asset performance isn’t compromised by short-term decisions.

Post-project review and lifecycle support

Our engagement doesn’t end at project closeout. We support FPSO and FSO clients with post-application warranty inspection, failure investigations, and long-term coatings management plans. Through condition monitoring and data analysis, we help clients optimise maintenance intervals and reduce unexpected downtime.
