Periods of geopolitical disruption place significant pressure on global shipping and energy infrastructure. Rising fuel costs, supply chain uncertainty, restricted trade routes, and heightened operational risk all increase the importance of asset reliability.

In this environment, coatings are no longer just a protective barrier applied during maintenance cycles. Their performance directly affects:

“Current geopolitical tensions have had limited direct impact on the Energy & Infrastructure (E&I) sector, while their primary effect has been on commercial marine shipping, particularly crude oil tankers and bulk carriers operating through strategic trade routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.

The offshore oil and gas sector remains resilient. Shuttle tankers servicing FPSOs and FSOs operate locally rather than through high-risk shipping lanes, and sufficient global tanker capacity exists to support offshore production. Continued sanctions on Russian and Iranian crude, together with constrained supply, have helped sustain relatively high oil prices, supporting ongoing investment in offshore energy projects. Conversely, any easing of sanctions on Iranian exports could place downward pressure on prices, while tighter enforcement against the Russian shadow fleet could have the opposite effect.

Longer term, China's accelerating transition towards renewable energy and its substantial crude oil reserves are expected to moderate global oil demand growth.

Should disruption in the Strait of Hormuz continue, higher oil prices could improve the commercial viability of offshore developments in more geopolitically stable regions such as the North Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, potentially redirecting investment away from the Middle East.

From a coatings perspective, geopolitical uncertainty has relatively little direct impact on offshore energy assets. The greater challenge remains extending the service life of ageing facilities, where durable coating systems, passive fire protection (PFP), cathodic protection, corrosion under insulation (CUI) management and effective inspection regimes are critical to supporting 25+ year operational lifecycles and life-extension programmes. Asset owners continue to favour FPSO conversions, refurbishments, and fabric maintenance over newbuild projects to reduce capital expenditure and accelerate project delivery.”

Historically, coating procurement has often been influenced by short-term capital cost considerations. However, geopolitical uncertainty is shifting attention towards lifecycle performance and risk reduction.

Asset owners are increasingly evaluating questions such as:

  • What is the operational cost of premature coating failure?
  • How much fuel inefficiency can be tolerated during periods of elevated bunker prices?
  • What are the financial consequences of unplanned repairs or extended drydocking?
  • How much downtime can critical offshore assets afford?
  • Are maintenance decisions sufficiently robust to withstand insurer and stakeholder scrutiny?


These questions highlight a broader shift from lowest-cost procurement towards investment strategies focused on long-term operational performance.

 

Lifecycle performance vs lowest-cost procurement

The true cost of a coating system is rarely reflected in its purchase price alone.

While lower-cost solutions may appear attractive during procurement, the long-term consequences of under-specification, poor surface preparation, inadequate quality assurance, or unsuitable repair strategies can be substantial.

Potential impacts include:

  • Increased fuel consumption through hull roughness and fouling
  • Higher maintenance expenditure
  • Unplanned off-hire and production interruptions
  • Accelerated asset degradation
  • Increased liability and compliance exposure


As a result, organisations are placing greater emphasis on:
