Studies by Safinah have shown that owners typically overspend by 10 to 25% on dry-dock coating costs. This case reinforces the need for careful thought about the scope of coating works at dry-dock.
The article on page 76 of Robban Assafina Magazine (Issue 50 – July/August 2017) describes how Safinah was brought in at an early stage of dry-dock coating refurbishment for two vessels to assess if the owners requirements were fully understood by the yard. The outcome was that Safinah revised the specification to be more appropriate to the owners plans for the vessels and a cost saving for them of $264,000… a 38% reduction on the original specification!
