Can current biofouling control and management practices be optimised with the help of next-generation sequencing (NGS)-based techniques?

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.6.5″ hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″]

International shipping facilitates global trade. However, the presence of marine biofouling on ships’ hulls may have a significant environmental impact as it leads to increased greenhouse gas emissions and it has been identified as a vector for the transportation of potentially problematic non-indigenous species (NIS).

The dynamics of colonisation and growth of marine biofouling are complex due to the number of factors that need to be considered. A PhD level research project, led by the University of Essex and supported by Safinah Group, will focus on utilising recent developments in next-generation sequencing techniques in the field of molecular ecology, to tackle these questions.

The project has been shortlisted for funding by the ARIES NERC DTP. The closing date for applications is 23:59 on 12th January 2021.
