Coating challenges in the Marine Sector

Although coatings typically account for only a small fraction of a vessel’s build or maintenance budget, their impact on asset integrity, operational efficiency, and total lifecycle cost is disproportionately large. As highlighted in Riviera Maritime Media’s article by Dr. Raouf Kattan, OBE, Marine coatings: the 2% investment that determines a ship’s fate, coatings can represent as little as 2% of the upfront cost of a vessel yet they ultimately dictate performance, lifetime, fuel efficiency, and asset protection. This paradox – low initial cost but high strategic importance – underlines why coatings must be treated as a critical investment rather than a routine consumable.
