Safinah at the Heart of World Maritime Day 2025

Embracing “Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity”

Each year, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) shines a spotlight on the critical relationship between the maritime industry and the health of our oceans. The 2025 theme – “Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity”,  calls for collective responsibility and forward-thinking innovation to safeguard the seas that sustain global trade, economies, and ecosystems.

For Safinah, as world-leading independent coatings consultancy, this theme resonates deeply. Safinah’s work sits at the nexus of science, sustainability, and shipping, where coating technology directly influences vessel efficiency, emissions, and marine ecosystem health. In celebrating World Maritime Day, Safinah highlights how its initiatives translate this year’s IMO theme into real-world impact.

Our Ocean: Protecting the Blue Lifeline

The ocean is more than a backdrop to Safinah’s work – it is central to the company’s mission. Coatings play a decisive role in hull performance, biofouling prevention, and pollution reduction. Poor coating choices can increase drag, fuel consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and even spread invasive species.

Safinah’s consultancy services directly address these risks by ensuring vessel coatings are selected, applied, and managed with both performance and environmental stewardship in mind. This helps clients – from shipowners to insurers – protect not just their investments, but also the marine ecosystems that underpin them.

Our Obligation: Driving Industry Responsibility

The IMO theme highlights duty as much as opportunity. Safinah recognises that the maritime sector must not only comply with regulations but also proactively reduce environmental harm.

Safinah’s failure analysis and dispute resolution services provide shipowners and managers with unbiased technical clarity, ensuring that poor practices leading to ocean pollution or unnecessary maintenance are identified and corrected.

Our Opportunity: Innovation for a Sustainable Future

Sustainability is not only an obligation – it’s a chance to unlock efficiencies and new value. Safinah’s technical knowledge transforms coating decisions into opportunities for:

  • Lower emissions and operating costs through optimised hull performance,
  • Longer asset lifetimes by minimising corrosion and premature failures,
  • Regulatory resilience in meeting evolving IMO and ESG standards.

Safinah’s ongoing research into low-leachant, durable coating systems represents a clear step toward marine protection. By helping clients adopt advanced materials and better lifecycle strategies, Safinah demonstrates how profitability and sustainability can align.

Case Studies in Action: FPSO Integrity in Brazil and West Africa

For floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) units – critical offshore assets, Safinah is conducting multiple in-depth tank surveys to identify and reduce corrosion risks. These interventions prevented structural damage, avoided costly downtime, and help extend service life, minimising the need for environmentally intensive repair campaigns.

Looking Ahead: Safinah’s Commitment

Safinah regards World Maritime Day not as a single event but as a reminder of its ongoing role in shaping a sustainable maritime industry. Looking forward, the company is committed to:

  • Providing independent expert knowledge to ship owners on the full spectrum of new technologies, specification, selection, drydock management and the critical performance review and analysis to enable continuous improvement in hull condition and reporting.
  • Developing data-driven case studies to showcase measurable ocean benefits of better coating management.
  • Collaborating with marine research institutions and regulators to embed independent expertise in global sustainability standards.
