One of the world’s most prestigious super yachts, was suffering from a filler cracking issue at the rear, close to the large stern door. Every time a repair was initiated the filler would crack in the same place with the problem increasing in size usually within a very short time. Major paint companies had tried to repair the area on several occasions but to date without success.
Functional specifications to reduce through life costs
The project is to develop a method to assess the technical merit of bids from rival paint companies after the owner had put a fleet coating contract out to tender.
Safinah used a functional coating specification approach to identify the key attributes for the client in the critical vessel areas.

Blistering of cargo tank coatings
Safinah conducted an investigation for an insurance company to determine the root cause of the a blistering of the cargo tank coatings on a number of vessels. Safinah surveyed the cargo tank coatings and took appropriate paint flake samples for analysis by computerised optical microscopy. Based on the inspection, the vessel cargo history and the paint flake analysis, Safinah was able to determine the cause of the blistering was due to poor surface cleaning prior to application of the tank coatings.
Detachment of underwater hull coatings
This project involved a vessel that had extensive detachment of the underwater hull coatings which the management company instructed Safinah to review the in dock vessel condition, coating supplier reports and paint flake analysis to determine the root cause of the coating detachment.
